The conversation around fertility and reproductive health in India has evolved significantly over the past few decades. Once considered a sensitive and rarely discussed subject, infertility is now increasingly being approached with greater awareness, acceptance, and access to advanced medical solutions.
From breakthroughs in assisted reproductive technologies to the growing emphasis on fertility preservation and personalized care, reproductive medicine is opening new possibilities for individuals and couples aspiring to become parents.
In an exclusive interaction, Prof. Dr. Hrishikesh Pai, one of India’s leading fertility specialists and pioneers in assisted reproductive technologies, shares his insights on the changing fertility landscape, the importance of early awareness, the impact of lifestyle choices, and how innovation and compassionate care are shaping the future of reproductive healthcare in India.
1. You have dedicated more than four decades to reproductive medicine. What continues to inspire your work in fertility care?
Every successful pregnancy and every child born after years of struggle reinforces why I chose this field. Fertility treatment is unique because it combines science with hope and human emotions. The opportunity to positively impact families and bring joy to aspiring parents continues to inspire me every day.
2. In your view, what are some of the biggest misconceptions people still have about infertility?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that infertility is solely a woman’s issue. In reality, fertility challenges can arise from either partner or a combination of factors. Another misconception is that infertility treatments are always complex or unsuccessful. Advances in reproductive medicine have significantly improved success rates, and early consultation often leads to better outcomes.
3. How important is early fertility awareness and education among young adults today?
Fertility awareness is extremely important. Many young adults are well-informed about general health but may not fully understand factors that influence reproductive health, such as age, lifestyle, stress, and certain medical conditions. Educating people early enables them to make informed decisions about family planning and seek timely medical advice when necessary.
4. What role do lifestyle choices play in reproductive health and fertility outcomes?
Lifestyle plays a significant role in fertility. Factors such as maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, getting adequate sleep, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and staying physically active can positively influence reproductive health. While medical interventions are important, adopting healthy lifestyle habits can significantly improve fertility potential and treatment outcomes.
5. What advice would you offer to couples who may be hesitant to seek fertility treatment?
I would encourage couples not to delay seeking guidance. Infertility is a medical condition, and there should be no stigma associated with asking for help. Advances in reproductive medicine have created numerous treatment possibilities that were unimaginable a few decades ago. The earlier couples seek professional advice, the more options are available to them. Most importantly, they should remain hopeful and remember that they are not alone on this journey.
