Western chapter of India Skills 2021 commences today in Gandhinagar, Gujarat with over 225 participants

Gandhinagar (Gujarat), 29 October 2021: The Western chapter of IndiaSkills2021 Regional Competition started today in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, bringing together over 225 candidates from five states—Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. The four-day competition will cover a range of skills such as autobody repair, bakery, floristry, bricklaying, fashion technology, mobile robotics, among others.IndiaSkills Competition is the country’s biggest skill platform that enables the youth to display their skills.

Today, the opening ceremony was inaugurated by Shri Brijeshkumar Merja, Hon’ble Minister of State, Labour & Employment, Panchayat (Independent Charge), Rural Housing & Rural Development, Government of Gujarat in the presence of Smt. Anju Sharma (IAS), Principal Secretary, Labour& Employment Department, Government of Gujarat, and Shri Alok Kumar Pandey (IAS), Director, Employment & Training and Mission Director, Gujarat Skill Development Mission (GSDM). Shri Jaikant Singh, Senior Head, WorldSkills, Shri Jignesh Patel, Chairman, Organising Committee and Group Director, Khodiyar Group, Shri Jagdish Prasad Meena, Regional Director, Regional Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (RDSDE), Gujarat, and Shri Pravinbhai Patel, Trustee, Umiya Foundation and Managing Director, Pravin Spintex Pvt. Ltd. also graced the event.

Of the total 225+ competitors, Maharashtra has the highest number of participants (85) from the state. This is followed by Rajasthan (43), Gujarat (40), Madhya Pradesh (37), and Goa (21)candidates.

Following the inaugural ceremony at the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar, skill competitions will be conducted on 30-31 October at 18 Partner Institutes across the city. The winners of the competition will be announced at the closing ceremony on 1 November.

IndiaSkills Competition is designed to demonstrate the highest standards of skills in India and make vocational training aspiration for the youth in the country. Winners from all Regional Competitions (East – Patna, North – Chandigarh, and South–Visakhapatnam) will enter IndiaSkills National Competition to be held in Bengaluru, Karnataka in December 2021. National winners will under undergo training for a year to represent India at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China in 2022.

Witnessing over 250,000 registrations, IndiaSkills 2021 began with district and state-level competitions in August-September. This year, IndiaSkills Regional Competition will bring together 1,500 participants from 30 states/union territories across four regions. The Eastern chapter of IndiaSkills 2021 concluded in Patna, Bihar last week with over 240 participating in the competition. In the competition, 98 candidates from 8 states/union territories were declared winners. The Regional Competition in the West will be followed by competitions in Chandigarh (North), and Visakhapatnam (South), following which IndiaSkills National Competition will be conducted. Winners of the IndiaSkills National Competition will undergo training to represent India at WorldSkills Shanghai in October 2022. 

During these competitions, participants get multi-level industry training through boot camps and programs such as project-based training, industry and corporate training, exposure visits to industries, mind coaching, and personality development. NSDC, through its Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) and partner institutions, trains the candidates for the competitions and for future endeavors as well.

NSDC has been leading India’s participation at the WorldSkills Competitions. WorldSkills, the gold standard for skill excellence, is a biennial event that records participation from over 80 nations. Skilled and talented youth from across the world compete on the international platform in multiple trades. In the previous edition of WorldSkills held in Kazan, Russia in 2019, India ranked 13 of 63 countries that participated in the global event. More than 1,350 candidates participated in 56 skills, and team India gave its best-ever performance by winning four medals (one gold, one silver, two bronze medals) along with 15 Medallions of Excellence.
